After an introductory instruction and a trial task, the test is completed in a time-limited, multiple choice format (multiple selection from 4 alternatives). One task (item) per page is given, in which logical reasoning must be used to select the 2-dimensional pattern from which the given 3-dimensional figure can be created. It is possible to skip items, and to scroll forwards and backwards.

SPACE is implemented in liquid format: the tasks are drawn from a pool and arranged according to increasing difficulty, whereby test difficulty and subject areas are kept constant for all participants.

Theoretical background

SPACE ascertains a person's spatial awareness and orientation in three-dimensional space. The procedure measures logical deductive reasoning with figural-spatial task-material and is therefore to be classified as fluid intelligence. Spatial imagination is one of the comparatively specific forms of intelligence measurement and is an integral part of established intelligence theories. The employment of SPACE should be justified on the basis of a requirements analysis.
